World Environment Day 2025:

Taking Action Together at Rethink Recycling

At Rethink Recycling, every day is an opportunity to take action against plastic pollution – but World Environment Day on 5 June 2025 gives us the perfect moment to shine a spotlight on the urgent need for collective change.

This year’s theme, #BeatPlasticPollution, is a powerful call to action – and it’s exactly what we do every day. Through our hands-on process of collecting, washing, sorting and remanufacturing post-consumer plastic lids, we’re transforming waste into educational tools and functional products. It’s local, community-led impact—driven by real solutions.

To celebrate World Environment Day and amplify this year’s message, we’re hosting Community Days across June, where you can:

  • Learn how to recycle plastic lids the right way

  • See our machines in action

  • Discover how micro-actions lead to macro-impact

  • Get hands-on with sustainability

Plastic pollution has found its way into every corner of our planet – even into our bodies. But we believe that by working together and empowering communities, we can change the story. As global leaders prepare to meet again in July to negotiate a global treaty to end plastic pollution, we’re proud to be part of the solution, right here in Melbourne.

Join us at Rethink Recycling and be part of the movement. Because the future is circular—and it starts with us.

Community Day Details

What to Expect

Have a stash of plastic lids at home? Bring them along! You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at how we sort, wash and process lids for remanufacture into useful products. Better yet, you can roll up your sleeves and help – it’s a hands-on, rewarding way to support the circular economy and reduce landfill waste.

So far this year, we’ve collected more than 100,000 plastic lids – and we rely on the energy and dedication of our incredible volunteers to keep the process going.

Why It Matters

Hi there. I work in early childhood and am the room leader. It is too late to organise an excursion, however do you have a video that we can use in our toddler room? I’d love to see how you do this process and share it with our children and the Centre.
